Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help keep your chimney flue cleaner and safer.

The Benefits of Seasoned Firewood

Seasoned firewood has been dried to reduce its moisture content, ideally for six months to a year. Burning seasoned wood produces less smoke and fewer creosote deposits in your chimney flue, minimizing the risk of chimney fires and reducing the need for frequent cleanings.

Look for firewood with cracks and a lighter weight compared to freshly cut wood. Properly seasoned wood will burn more efficiently, providing more heat with less fuel. It also ignites more easily, contributing to a cleaner and safer burn.

Types of Firewood for Clean Burning

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and ash are excellent choices for clean burning. These woods are denser, producing more heat and burning longer with less smoke. They also contribute to less creosote buildup compared to softwoods like pine, which can produce sticky tar that coats the flue.

Avoid burning softwoods or green (unseasoned) wood as they produce more smoke and creosote, increasing the need for chimney maintenance. Choose hardwoods to keep your flue cleaner while enjoying a warmer and more efficient fire.

Storing Firewood Properly

Proper firewood storage is essential to ensure it remains seasoned. Stack wood off the ground and cover the top with a tarp, leaving the sides exposed to allow airflow. This prevents moisture accumulation and promotes drying, ensuring your wood remains in optimal burning condition.

Arrange firewood in a single row with space between logs to maximize air circulation. Keep your storage area clear of debris and rotting wood to deter pests and mold. Proper storage practices help maintain wood quality and contribute to a cleaner burn.
